Hebrews 5: 1-8
This chapter starts out with the qualities of a High Priest and end with there is only one Person that meets all these qualities and can minister to you and me, and that person is Jesus the Christ.
A High Priest is chosen,
acts on behalf of men in relation to God,
offers gifts and sacrifices for our sins,
Is gentle and kind as he deals with us as sinners because he is a sinner also and deals with the same sin issues
The last quality is that this person needs to be called by God. If a person self-promotes himself to priesthood, this in not ordained by God.
Verse 5 tells us that Jesus was exalted by God to the High Priest position. Remember in Hebrews 4 Jesus was tempted in every way that we are tempted so he knows the temptations that we face. Jesus overcame the temptation by living a sinless life.
Our model is Jesus, while he was in the flesh, he offered up prayers and supplication to his Father. The One that could save Him. As he lived a sinless life God exalted him to High Priest.
